Melk and Vienna at night
Today we are in Melk for the morning and then cruise down past castles etc on our way to Vienna.
No rain today in the forecast but cloudy and 5c, strange how people are surprised it is cold on this cruise. I have to say I am surprised how cold it is on the ship, we keep trying to put up the heat in the room but no joy, others are commenting on this too.
Hopefully I will have time this afternoon between drinking and looking at castles to do a count of the haul so far, we are in the 21 range for those of you still in the race. But please note I have at least 4 markets in the next few days which are highly rated so this is just a status update and in no way reflects the final tally.
Benedictine Abbey Tour
- Overview
- Located above the town of Melk on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube, Melk Abbey (Stift Melk) is one of Europe’s largest and most revered Baroque monasteries. Originally founded in the 11th century, this magnificent Benedictine abbey now houses a museum chronicling its history and a famous library with countless medieval manuscripts. The library served as the inspiration for Umberto Eco’s classic novel “The Name of the Rose.” Within these walls you will find frescoes painted by Johann Michael Rottmayr and Paul Troger, as well as a famed collection of musical manuscripts. After your tour, enjoy free time to explore the picturesque village of Melk, one of Europe’s great cultural heritage sites.
- So if you go to Melk and they say we are going to take you to the Abbey, run don’t walk. The church here is like where gold gilding went to die. We have seen a number of churches is Europe but this was over the top. Sorry they did not allow pictures of this place but WOW GOLD EVERYWHERE.
- Here is a pic of the outside.
- Another change, decided to dump the concert and instead do, drum roll please, sound the trumpets, a nighttime Christmas market.
- So this market was visually stunning, but lacking in original items but I still got 2, sorry did not get count done as got distracted by watching the river go by. Bob got a hear shaped mug.Tomorrow I have 2 more chances so fingers crossed for those of you who bet high.
We decided to walk down from the Abbey to the boat as we needed to move and it was a lovely walk, surprise a small market where Bob got a mug and I bought a small angel who is gold as that was a gold church. It was a lovely break and we had great company with a woman we have met from the first day in Prague.
Now we have lunch and cruise to Vienna. See below for an update

ReplyDeleteSorry for the size of that but you can copy and paste or easier to put "melk abby" in Google Images search box
DeleteGet shopping Susan!!! You're nowhere near where I need you to be! I do think I had some kind of oblivion around your comment that pieces within a nativity didn't each count, but Oh Well. It's the visuals I'm really looking forward to.
